“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” ― Henry David Thoreau, Walden

About Alicia Finlayson

Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Alicia Finlayson grew up loving the Wasatch mountains and nature around her, Alicia is a fine artist who works confidently in oils and watercolors.  Her obsession for light and nature have led her on an extraordinary journey.  Her plein air paintings, outdoor sketching, and photography all serve as an invaluable resource and inspiration for her longer more sustained paintings in the studio. Her paintings capture the essence of her subjects with expressive-painterly brushwork, light, color, and carefully orchestrated compositions.

Education

Alicia’s study of painting has taken her across the world. She received her BFA from Boston University majoring in painting and printmaking, which gave her a foundation in classical representational art.

Later her life would take her to Taichung, Taiwan where she was heavily influenced by the bold brush work of Chinese painting, which still continues to influence her watercolors today. Alicia’s post graduate studies led her to Perugia and Florence, Italy, where she studied painting and printmaking. Returning to the States, Alicia completed her MFA in painting at Brigham Young University.

With her continued commitment to seeing the landscape through new eyes, Alicia has taken classes and workshops from landscape artists she most admires, including: Jill Carver, Kathryn Stats, Keith Bond, John Hughes, and Ron Rencher

Alicia enjoys sharing what she loves by teaching watercolor, drawing and oil. She has taught for BYU, UVU. She currently teaches her own workshops, and art courses for Salt Lake Community College.

Artist Statement

I discovered my greatest joy comes from painting and being in nature. Through plein air painting I found a way to “live, breathe, and drink,” each season. Painting for me is a form of meditation as I study and capture the essence of nature’s splendid, shifting light and color. My objective is not to make a literal copy or record details of nature as much as to recreate a sensation through color, value, composition, suggestive brushwork, and abstraction.
